Pernilla August (born Mia Pernilla Hertzman-Ericson on February 13, 1958) is a Swedish actress, director, and screenwriter. She gained prominence as one of Sweden's leading actresses and collaborated extensively with director Ingmar Bergman. In 1992, she won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in Bergman's film, The Best Intentions. Internationally, August is well-known for her portrayal of Shmi Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. August began her acting career in theatre and school productions, and later appeared in several films by notable directors. She studied acting at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting in Stockholm before catching the attention of Ingmar Bergman.
