    Petros 'Pete' Sampras, born August 12, 1971, is an American former tennis player. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Sampras turned professional in 1988 and retired after winning the 2002 US Open, defeating his rival Andre Agassi. Throughout his career, Sampras won a total of 14 major singles titles, including a then-record seven Wimbledon championships, two Australian Opens, and five US Opens. He held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 286 weeks, including a record six consecutive year-end No. 1 rankings. Sampras was known for his precise and powerful serve, earning him the nickname 'Pistol Pete.' He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.
