Ray Benson Biography
Ray Benson (born Ray Benson Seifert on March 16, 1951) is a prominent figure in the Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. He is also known for his work as an actor and voice actor. Benson, who was raised Jewish, co-founded Asleep at the Wheel in 1970 with Lucky Oceans and Leroy Preston in Paw Paw, West Virginia. The group later moved to Austin in 1973, following a recommendation from Willie Nelson. Over the years, Asleep at the Wheel has released more than 20 albums and received 9 Grammy awards. Benson has been the consistent driving force behind the band, while also producing albums for various artists including Dale Watson, Suzy Bogguss, and Carolyn Wonderland.
