VelJohnson is also recognized for his role as LAPD Sergeant Al Powell in the popular films Die Hard and Die Hard 2. Born on August 16, 1952, in Queens, New York City, VelJohnson attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and later obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from New York University. During his early acting career, he changed his name from Reginald Johnson to Reginald VelJohnson.
