Richard Travis Hall, born on June 10, 1954, is an American comedian, writer, documentary maker, and musician. He gained recognition in the 1980s as a sketch comedian, writing and performing for popular series such as Fridays, Not Necessarily the News, and Saturday Night Live. Hall rose to prominence in the United Kingdom after winning a Perrier Comedy Award in 2000, using the character of Tennesseean country musician Otis Lee Crenshaw. He has since appeared on various panel shows including QI. Hall has created and starred in several BBC series, both comedies with Mike Wilmot and documentaries about American cinema. Additionally, he has maintained a successful stand-up comedy career as both Crenshaw and himself. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Hall grew up in Charlotte and claims partial Cherokee descent.
