After graduating from Pittsburg Senior High School in 1964, he went on to attend the University of San Francisco, graduating in 1967. During the Vietnam War era, Poe served in the United States Army. He has an extensive career in movies, television, and Broadway. Notably, he played Gul Evek in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. Poe has appeared in numerous Broadway productions, including M. Butterfly, Our Country's Good, The Pajama Game, Journey's End, and All The Way, earning him multiple Tony Awards.
