    Rick James Biography
    Rick James, born James Ambrose Johnson Jr. on February 1, 1948, was an American-Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. Raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teenage years and was part of various bands. To avoid being drafted into the army, he joined the U.S. Navy Reserve. In 1964, James moved to Toronto, Canada, and formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who signed with Motown Records in 1966. However, James's military desertion led to his conviction and time in jail. After release, he moved to California and formed rock and funk groups. Finally, in 1977, James achieved success with the Stone City Band in Buffalo, signing with a record label.
