Richard Lynn Scott, born December 1, 1952, is an American attorney, businessman, and politician. He is currently serving as the junior United States senator from Florida since 2019. Prior to his political career, Scott was the 45th governor of Florida from 2011 to 2019. He is a member of the Republican Party. Scott obtained his education from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University. In 1987, he co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation, which later merged to form Columbia/HCA, the nation's largest for-profit healthcare company. Scott faced legal issues and resigned as chief executive in 1997 after the company defrauded Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs.
