Robert Carleton Hobbs is an American art historian and curator specializing in twentieth-century art. He has held the Rhoda Thalhimer Endowed Chair of American Art at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1991 and has served as a visiting professor at Yale University since 2004. Hobbs has held positions at Cornell University, University of Iowa, Florida State University, and Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in Iran. He is known for his numerous books, in-depth essays, and exhibitions. Born in 1946, Hobbs is the son of scientist Charles S. Hobbs and coloratura soprano Corinne Clay. He has made significant contributions to the field of art history through his research and teaching.
