He gained recognition for his recurring role as Chancellor Gowron in the Star Trek franchise, appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for over ten years. O'Reilly has also appeared in over 100 films and television episodes, often playing antagonistic or villainous characters. His extensive television credits include shows such as Cheers, Knight Rider, MacGyver, and NYPD Blue. He has also acted on Broadway and received a Drama-Logue Award for directing the play Getting Out. O'Reilly has since retired from acting.
