He is the founder of the high-end Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, which sells luxury clothing, perfume, and leather accessories. Cavalli was born in Florence, Italy, and enrolled at the local Art Institute, where he specialized in textile print. During his time as a student, he gained recognition for his flower prints on knit fabrics, catching the attention of major Italian hosiery factories. In the early 1970s, Cavalli invented and patented a printing procedure on leather and began creating patchworks of different materials. He debuted these techniques in Paris and quickly received commissions from renowned fashion houses.
