Rosalind Chao (born September 23, 1959) is an American actress known for her roles in various movies and TV shows. She gained recognition for her portrayal of Soon-Lee Klinger in the CBS show AfterMASH during the mid-1980s. Chao's notable film appearance came in 1993 when she played Rose Hsu Jordan in The Joy Luck Club. She also made appearances in popular TV series such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as the recurring character Keiko O'Brien. In 2003, she portrayed Dr. Kim on The O.C. Chao's recent work includes playing Hua Li, Mulan's mother, in the live-action remake of Mulan released in 2020. Born in Anaheim, California, Chao's parents were Peking opera performers who later ran a successful pancake restaurant. She attended Pomona College and USC, graduating in 1978. Chao's parents played a significant role in inspiring her to pursue acting.
