Samantha Smith (June 29, 1972 – August 25, 1985) was an American peace activist and child actress. Born in Manchester, Maine, she gained fame for her anti-war activities during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In 1982, she wrote a letter to Soviet Union's General Secretary, Yuri Andropov, which resulted in an invitation to visit the Soviet Union. Smith became known as America's Youngest Ambassador and participated in peacemaking efforts in Japan. She also wrote a book called Journey to the Soviet Union, chronicling her visit. Additionally, Smith worked as a child actress, hosting a special on the 1984 US presidential election and appearing in other TV shows and movies.
