Sandra Elizabeth Welch, popularly known as Sandy Welch, is a British television writer and screenwriter born on December 6, 1953, in Chester, Cheshire. She has made significant contributions to the BBC as a screenwriter, developing various serials, including The Magnificent 7, Our Mutual Friend, North and South, and Jane Eyre. In 2009, Welch adapted Jane Austen's Emma and The Turn of the Screw for the BBC. Her work on Our Mutual Friend earned her a BAFTA for 'Best Drama Serial' in 1999, and she received nominations for the Edgar Award and the Emmy Award for her work on A Dark Adapted Eye and Jane Eyre, respectively. Welch is a graduate of the National Film and Television School. She is married to television dramatist Stephen Poliakoff, and they have two children.
