Sebastian Newbold Coe, Baron Coe, also known as Seb Coe, is a British politician and former track and field athlete. Born on September 29, 1956, Coe achieved great success in his athletic career, winning four Olympic medals, including gold medals in the 1500 meters event in 1980 and 1984. He set numerous world records in middle-distance track events, including the 800 meters record that stood unbroken until 1997. Coe's rivalries with fellow British athletes Steve Ovett and Steve Cram were legendary during the 1980s. After retiring from athletics, Coe served as a Conservative member of parliament from 1992 to 1997. He also played a crucial role in the successful bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics and served as the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
