Shari Lewis (1933-1998) was an American ventriloquist, puppeteer, children's entertainer, television show host, dancer, singer, actress, author, and symphonic conductor. Born Phyllis Naomi Hurwitz to Jewish parents in New York City, Lewis began her career as a performer at a young age, encouraged by her parents. She gained fame for creating the sock puppet Lamb Chop, which appeared on Captain Kangaroo and the early seasons of Hi Mom. Throughout her career, Lewis won a Peabody Award and entertained audiences with her versatile talents. She was also a published author and conducted symphonies. Lewis' contributions to the entertainment industry continue to be remembered and appreciated.
