Shirley Knight Hopkins (July 5, 1936 – April 22, 2020) was an American actress known for her appearances in over 50 feature films, television films, television series, and Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. She played both leading and character roles throughout her career. Knight received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960) and Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). In the 1960s, she had leading roles in Hollywood films such as The Couch (1962), House of Women (1962), and The Group (1966). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her role in the British film Dutchman (1966). Knight also won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in Kennedy's Children (1976). Her later film career included supporting roles in movies such as Endless Love (1981) and As Good as It Gets (1997).
