Simon Ostrovsky (Симо́н Остро́вский; born February 2, 1981) is a Russian-American documentary filmmaker and journalist. He gained prominence for his coverage of the Russo-Ukrainian War for VICE News, reporting extensively on the unfolding events in Ukraine in 2014. Ostrovsky was kidnapped and held hostage by pro-Russia separatists for three days in April 2014, during which he was subjected to torture. His experience shed light on the dangers faced by journalists reporting in conflict zones. In 2015, Ostrovsky directed the documentary 'Selfie Soldiers', which examined the social media presence of a Russian soldier deployed in Ukraine.
