Sonny Bono Biography
Sonny Bono (1935 - 1998) was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and politician. He gained fame as part of the popular singing duo Sonny & Cher, alongside his second wife Cher. Bono served as the 16th mayor of Palm Springs, California from 1988 to 1992 and represented California's 44th district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 until his death. Born in Detroit to Zena and Santo Bono, he was of Italian descent. Bono's contributions to intellectual property rights were honored posthumously when the United States Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 was named after him. This Act extended the term of copyright by 20 years.
