Steven Ross Purcell (born October 1, 1961) is an American cartoonist, animator, game designer, and voice actor. He is best known as the creator of the media franchise Sam & Max, which includes an animated television series and several video games. Purcell received an Eisner Award in 2007 for his work on Sam & Max. He began his career creating comic strips for the California College of Arts and Craft's newsletter and later worked as a freelance artist for Marvel Comics and Fishwrap Productions. Purcell joined LucasArts in 1988 as an artist and animator, contributing to several LucasArts adventure games. He also collaborated with Nelvana to create the Sam & Max television series in 1997.
