Raised in Yorkshire, he has showcased his talent in various TV shows including Happy Valley, Trial and Retribution, Merlin, The Borgias, Vera, Rumble, Strictly Confidential, Badboys, and Ripper Street. Hartley has also portrayed recurring characters in The Bill, EastEnders, and Doctors. He has made notable film appearances in Allies, Ruby Strangelove Young Witch, Robocroc, Jet Stream, The Walker, A Dog of Flanders, and Christopher Columbus: The Discovery where he starred alongside Marlon Brando, Tom Selleck, Benicio Del Toro, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
