Born on January 29, 1954, in Lincoln, Illinois, Kinney is a founding member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company along with Gary Sinise and Jeff Perry. His parents are Elizabeth L. (née Eimer), a telephone operator, and Kenneth C. Kinney, a tractor company supervisor. Kinney has been involved in theater since 1974 and has a penchant for using cinematic techniques in his productions. His early influences were the films of Cassavetes, which inspired the company's innovative approach to stage techniques.
