Theresa Merritt Biography
Theresa Merritt Hines (September 24, 1922 – June 12, 1998) was an American actress known for her roles in That's My Mama (1974–1975) and films such as The Wiz (1978) and Billy Madison (1995). Born in Emporia, Virginia, Merritt gained fame for her portrayal of Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, earning a Tony Award nomination. She also replaced Mabel King as Evillene in The Wiz before leaving the role due to its impact on her voice. Merritt's Broadway credits include Mule Bone (1991), Division Street (1980), and Don't Play Us Cheap! (1972). She toured with road companies of Funny Girl, Show Boat, and South Pacific.
