Thomas J. McCarthy

Thomas J. McCarthy (born February 20, 1956) is an American researcher and Professor of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and received his education in the Pittsfield public school system. McCarthy graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.S. in chemistry in 1978, and earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982. He has been a faculty member in the polymer science and engineering department at UMass Amherst since 1982 and was promoted to associate professor in his career. McCarthy is known for his contributions to the field of polymer science and his research in polymer synthesis and characterization.
