Tom Clancy (April 12, 1947 – October 1, 2013) was an American novelist known for his espionage and military-science storylines. His novels, set during and after the Cold War, were technically detailed and filled with thrilling plots. Clancy's books were highly popular, with seventeen of them becoming bestsellers and over 100 million copies sold. He also wrote screenplays, nonfiction books on military subjects, and contributed to video games. In addition to his literary career, Clancy was a part-owner of the Baltimore Orioles, a Major League Baseball team, and served as vice-chairman of their community activities and public affairs committees. He began his writing career in 1984 with the publication of his first novel, The Hunt for Red October.
