Thomas Alan Waits, born December 7, 1949, is an American musician, composer, songwriter, and actor. Known for his distinctive deep, gravelly voice, Waits' lyrics often explore the darker side of society. He initially worked in jazz during the 1970s but incorporated blues, rock, vaudeville, and experimental genres in his music since the 1980s. Born and raised in California, Waits began his career singing on the San Diego folk music circuit and later moved to Los Angeles, where he signed a recording contract with Asylum Records. His early albums, such as Closing Time (1973) and The Heart of Saturday Night (1974), delved into themes of nightlife, poverty, and crime. Waits has enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success throughout his career.
