Ulrich Matthes is a German actor, born on May 9, 1959, in West Berlin. He received his education at the Evangelisches Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster and studied acting under Else Bongers in Berlin. Matthes is best known for his portrayal of Joseph Goebbels in the 2004 film Downfall. He also played Fr. Henri Kremer, a Catholic priest imprisoned at Dachau, in the 2004 movie The Ninth Day. Matthes has served as the standard German voice for Kenneth Branagh, alongside Martin Umbach. In 2019, he was a member of the jury that selected Pauline Curnier Jardin as the winner of the Preis der Nationalgalerie. Matthes has received various awards throughout his career, including the Bavarian Film Award for Best Actor in 1999 and the Deutscher Theaterpreis Der Faust in 2008.
