Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. (born October 20, 1958) is an American actor. He began his acting career in 1985 with a small role in Peter Weir's thriller, Witness. Over the years, Mortensen has appeared in numerous notable films, including The Indian Runner (1991), Carlito's Way (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), G.I. Jane (1997), and A Perfect Murder (1998). However, Mortensen gained international recognition for his portrayal of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003). He has also worked extensively with filmmaker David Cronenberg, earning critical acclaim for his roles in A History of Violence (2005), Eastern Promises (2007), and A Dangerous Method (2011). Mortensen has received Academy Award nominations for his performances in Captain Fantastic (2016) and Green Book (2018). In addition to acting, Mortensen made his directorial debut with the film Falling (2020).
