Wayne Michael Coyne (born January 13, 1961) is an American musician known for his role as the lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist, theremin player, and songwriter for the band the Flaming Lips. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Coyne moved to Oklahoma with his family in early 1961. Growing up in Oklahoma City, he developed a passion for music and sports, playing pickup football with his siblings and forming a group called 'The Fearless Freaks.' Coyne began working as a fry cook at a Long John Silver's restaurant during high school, experiencing a rash of robberies during his second year of employment. Coyne's notable contributions to the music industry include his innovative musical style and captivating stage presence.
