Will Butler, born on October 6, 1982, is an American multi-instrumentalist and composer. He gained prominence as a former member of the indie rock band Arcade Fire, where he played synthesizer, bass, guitar, and percussion. Known for his spontaneity and on-stage antics, Will is the younger brother of Arcade Fire's frontman, Win Butler. In 2014, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film Her. Born in Truckee, California, and raised in The Woodlands, Texas, Will comes from a musical background, with his mother being a classical musician and his maternal grandfather being guitarist Alvino Rey. He studied at Phillips Exeter Academy and Northwestern University, majoring in Poetry and Slavic studies.
