Born to Lieutenant Colonel John Forward and Anne Forward, he hailed from a notable family with extensive land ownership in County Donegal. He was married to Isabella Stewart, who had familial connections to Bart. William Stewart. The couple had a daughter named Alice, who went on to marry Viscount Wicklow Ralph Howard and became the Countess of Wicklow.
