William Franklin Holden (born Beedle Jr.; April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981) was an American actor and a prominent figure in the film industry during the 1950s. He achieved great success as a leading actor, becoming one of the top box-office draws of his time. Holden won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Stalag 17 (1953) and received a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance in the television miniseries The Blue Knight (1973). Throughout his career, he appeared in several highly acclaimed movies, including Sunset Boulevard (1950), Sabrina (1954), Picnic (1955), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), The Wild Bunch (1969), and Network (1976). Holden was recognized as one of the most influential male stars of Classical Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute.
