John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle designer who publishes as 'Ludwig,' assumes his missing identical twin's identity to investigate the disappearance. Posing as detective James, he joins the Cambridge police at the request of James's wife, Lucy, his childhood friend, and becomes entangled in the investigation and local police procedures thereafter.
