Alec Newman, born on 27 November 1974 in Glasgow, Scotland, is a Scottish actor. He is best known for his portrayal of Paul Atreides in the Sci Fi Channel's 2000 miniseries adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune. Newman's father, Sandy Newman, is a member of the Scottish band Marmalade, and he has a brother named John James Newman, who appeared on The Voice UK in 2012. Prior to pursuing acting, Newman considered a career as a professional footballer and later trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduating from LAMDA, he built up a solid list of television and film credits, including the lead role in the Emmy award-winning miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune. Newman also had appearances in US TV and film, including a role as Barnabas Collins in a WB reboot of Dark Shadows.
