Derek Riddell (born 11 January 1967) is a Scottish television and theatre actor. He is best known for his portrayal of Richard Cawood in the BBC One Television series Happy Valley. Riddell has also appeared in other notable TV shows such as Gentleman Jack, Industry, and The Missing. He has made guest appearances in Doctor Who, Ugly Betty, Silent Witness, Waterloo Road, and Shetland. Born in Glasgow, Riddell is the son of teacher and former actress Hope Ross and former footballer Ian Riddell. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a degree in business before attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Riddell's career began with roles in BBC Scotland's Strathblair and popular TV shows like Taggart, Casualty, and The Bill. He gained recognition for his performances in Channel 4's The Book Group and comedy drama No Angels. In addition to his television work, Riddell has a strong presence in theatre.
