Desmond Tutu Biography
Desmond Tutu (7 October 1931 – 26 December 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was the first black African to hold the positions of Bishop of Johannesburg (1985-1986) and Archbishop of Cape Town (1986-1996). Tutu sought to merge ideas from black theology with African theology. He was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa, to a mixed Xhosa and Motswana family and grew up in poverty. Tutu trained as a teacher and married Nomalizo Leah Tutu, with whom he had several children. He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1960 and studied theology at King's College London. Tutu taught at various institutions and served as the director for Africa at the Theological Education Fund.
