Born in Forest Hills, New York City, Karan was raised by her mother in Woodmere, New York. She attended Hewlett High School and later studied at the Parsons School of Design. Karan began her career working for Anne Klein and eventually became the head of the Anne Klein design team. In 1984, she launched her own label, Donna Karan New York, which gained international recognition.
