James Hubert 'Eubie' Blake (February 7, 1887 – February 12, 1983) was an American pianist and composer known for his contributions to ragtime, jazz, and popular music. He gained prominence in 1921 when he co-wrote Shuffle Along, one of the first Broadway musicals by African Americans. Some of Blake's notable compositions include 'Bandana Days', 'Charleston Rag', 'Love Will Find a Way', 'Memories of You', and 'I'm Just Wild About Harry'. His works were showcased in the 1978 Broadway musical Eubie! In 1981, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan. Blake was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and survived a challenging childhood as the only surviving child of former slaves.
