Harvey Forbes Fierstein is an American actor, playwright, and screenwriter, born on June 6, 1954. Known for his distinctive gravelly voice, Fierstein has made a significant impact in theater, film, and television. He gained recognition for his work in the theater productions of Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, and his notable film appearances include Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, and providing the voice for Yao in Mulan and Mulan II. Fierstein has received several prestigious awards, including two Tony Awards for Torch Song Trilogy, and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. He is also an accomplished playwright, having written successful musicals such as Kinky Boots, Newsies, and A Catered Affair. In 2007, Fierstein was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
