Joanna Marion Scanlan is a British actress and writer. She is best known for her television roles in The Thick of It, Big School, Puppy Love, No Offence, Requiem, and The Larkins. Scanlan has been nominated for three BAFTA TV Awards for her work on Getting On. In film, she has appeared in Girl With a Pearl Earring, Notes on a Scandal, The Invisible Woman, and Bridget Jones's Baby. Scanlan won a British Academy Film Award and a British Independent Film Award for her performance in After Love. Born on 27 October 1961 in West Kirby, England, Scanlan grew up in North Wales and attended Brigidine Convent, Howell's School, and New Hall School.
