    Jonathan Earl Franzen (born August 17, 1959) is an American novelist and essayist. He gained critical acclaim and recognition for his 2001 novel The Corrections, which won the National Book Award and was a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction finalist. Franzen's subsequent novel, Freedom (2010), also received widespread praise. He has published essays in The New Yorker magazine since 1994 and is known for his 1996 Harper's essay 'Perchance to Dream' critiquing contemporary literature. Franzen's literary success has brought him both accolades and controversy, including a well-publicized feud with Oprah Winfrey over her selection of The Corrections for her book club. Born in Western Springs, Illinois, Franzen continues to write and recently published his latest novel Crossroads in 2021, the first in a planned trilogy.
