Liz Phair is an American rock singer-songwriter, born on April 17, 1967, in New Haven, Connecticut. She was primarily raised in the Chicago area and graduated from Oberlin College in 1990. Phair initially pursued her musical career in San Francisco but returned to Chicago and started self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly-Sound. These tapes caught the attention of Matador Records, leading to a recording contract. Her debut studio album, 'Exile in Guyville' (1993), received critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. Phair continued her success with albums like 'Whip-Smart' (1994) and 'Whitechocolatespaceegg' (1998). Her fourth album, 'Liz Phair' (2003), marked a shift towards pop rock and gained her a larger audience.
