Born in Smethwick, Staffordshire, Goddard is the daughter of David Goddard, a producer and director of TV shows. She attended Farnham Girls' Grammar School before moving to Australia at the age of 15. In Australia, she made early television appearances, including the ABC drama play Romanoff & Juliet and the popular series Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, where she played the role of Clarissa Merrick. Goddard returned to the UK in the 1970s and continued her successful acting career.
