Lou Reed (March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013) was an American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band The Velvet Underground. Reed's career spanned five decades, during which he also enjoyed a successful solo career. The Velvet Underground, although not commercially successful at the time, became highly influential in the underground and alternative rock music scenes. Reed's unique deadpan voice, poetic and transgressive lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were trademarks of his work. Prior to his music career, Reed studied poetry at Syracuse University and worked as a radio DJ. He began his career as a songwriter and session musician at Pickwick Records in New York City.
