Matthew Abram Groening is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator born on February 15, 1954. He gained recognition as the creator of the comic strip Life in Hell, which ran from 1977 to 2012. Groening's most notable contribution to television is the creation of The Simpsons, the longest-running U.S. primetime-television series and animated sitcom in history. The Simpsons originally started as animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 and later became its own series in 1989. In addition to The Simpsons, Groening also created the animated series Futurama (1999-2003, 2008-2013, 2023-present) and Disenchantment (2018-2023).
