Nichelle Nichols (born Grace Dell Nichols; December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022) was an American actress, singer, and dancer. She is best known for her groundbreaking portrayal of Uhura in Star Trek and its film sequels, which was significant for African American actresses on American television. Nichols began her career as a dancer, singer, and model in Chicago before transitioning to acting. She appeared on stage, television, and film throughout her career. In addition to her acting work, Nichols dedicated her time from 1977 to 2015 to promote NASA's programs and recruit diverse astronauts, including the first female and ethnic minority astronauts.
