Ornette Coleman Biography
Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman (March 9, 1930 – June 11, 2015) was an American jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist, and composer. He is best known as a principal founder of the free jazz genre, which emphasized an experimental approach to improvisation and departed from earlier jazz idioms. Coleman's pioneering works, such as his album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, abandoned traditional harmony-based composition, tonality, chord changes, and fixed rhythm. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, he taught himself to play the saxophone as a teenager. Coleman began his musical career playing in local R&B and bebop groups before forming his own ensemble in Los Angeles.
