Paul Butterfield Biography
Paul Vaughn Butterfield (December 17, 1942 – May 4, 1987) was an American blues harmonica player, singer, and bandleader. Starting his career as a classical flautist, Butterfield's passion for blues harmonica led him to explore the vibrant blues scene in Chicago. It was there that he connected with legendary blues figures like Muddy Waters, who provided him with invaluable support and opportunities to participate in jam sessions. In 1963, Butterfield formed the highly successful Paul Butterfield Blues Band, which gained popularity with their electric Chicago blues sound and fusion of rock and jazz. They performed at significant concerts and festivals, including Fillmore West, Fillmore East, Monterey Pop Festival, and Woodstock. Following the band's breakup in 1971, Butterfield continued to tour and record.
