    Richard James Appel is an American writer, producer, and former attorney. He is best known for his work as an executive producer and co-showrunner of Family Guy on Fox since 2012. Appel attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School, where he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. After working as a law clerk and federal attorney, he transitioned into comedy writing and joined The Simpsons as a writer. He wrote seven episodes for the show, including the popular episode 'Mother Simpson.' Appel went on to become showrunner and executive producer of King of the Hill, created the sitcom A.U.S.A., and worked on The Bernie Mac Show, American Dad!, and The Cleveland Show. Appel was married to writer Mona Simpson.
