He gained fame through his eccentric and energetic personality, promoting weight-loss programs and his Sweatin' to the Oldies line of aerobics videos. Simmons opened his gym, Slimmons, in Beverly Hills, California, to cater to the overweight and became widely known through television exposure and his consumer products.
