Richard Simmons, born Milton Teagle Simmons on July 12, 1948, is an American fitness personality and public figure. He gained fame through his eccentric and energetic personality, promoting weight-loss programs and his Sweatin' to the Oldies line of aerobics videos. Simmons opened his gym, Slimmons, in Beverly Hills, California, to cater to the overweight and became widely known through television exposure and his consumer products. He was a frequent guest on late-night television and radio talk shows, including the Late Show with David Letterman and The Howard Stern Show. Simmons is also known for his political activism, supporting noncompetitive physical education in public schools. His career has spanned decades, promoting health and exercise.
